Lymphedema Services Offered

Our therapists offer a variety of lymphedema treatments for your condition.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

A gentle, hands-on massage of both the affected body part and adjacent selected areas. MLD can move lymphatic fluid from the swollen region into parts of the lymphatic system that are still functioning.

Compression Garments and Wrapping

Multi-layer Compression Bandaging: Following MLD, the therapist wraps the treated area with layers of compression bandages. Bandages help prevent the re-accumulation of lymphatic fluid.

Post-Op Lymphatic Massage and Compression Therapy

Increasing lymphatic fluid mobility is beneficial for expedited healing. Compression Therapy has a positive effect for the lymphatic system as well as the circulatory system. Increased blood flow advances healing more quickly

Therapeutic Manual Lymphatic Drainage

MLD has an overall positive effect on healing, relaxation, and mood.

Conditions We Treat

Lymphedema

Lymphedema refers to the build-up of fluid under the skin in the leg or arm.

The lymphatic system plays a very important role in the immune system. lymph nodes move fluid through our bodies, picking up waste, bacteria, and viruses. This waste is flushed from our bodies through our lymph nodes. When damage occurs to the lymph nodes and they cease to work properly, fluid can back up in the tissues of limbs causing lymphedema.

Lipedema

Commonly confused with obesity, Lipedema only occurs in the limbs and does not spread to the hands or feet. It is also not known to cause other medical conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

The condition usually starts in the hip or groin area and moves down the legs until it reaches the ankles.  However, Lipedema can occur or worsen after puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. There is research underway that is trying to decipher the biological role of hormones, genetics, inflammation, and metabolism.

Lipo-Lymphedema

Lipo-lymphedema appears when Lipedema, obesity, and lymphedema are all presented together. This is commonly referred to as stage IV of Lipedema, which is when too much fat tissue puts pressure on the lymphatic system and then creates secondary lymphedema. This further impairs lymphatic fluid transport and creates an excess of congested fluid.

Swelling/General Edema

Manual Lymphatic drainage can reduce swelling by moving the excess fluid that builds up the area into the lymphatic system to flush out the extra waste, fluid, and toxins. It promotes healing and expedites recovery time in injuries such as sprains and strains.

Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Compression Therapy

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is important after surgery to help assist with healing. It helps increase circulation, flush out excess waste and fluid build-up, reduce the risk of infection, promote healing, and reduce scarring. Adding an appropriate compression garment will improve the healing process and reduce the risk of lymphedema occurring.

Post-Liposuction, Post-Plastic Surgery

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is often recommended by the surgeon after plastic surgery and liposuction. It provides more efficient healing and supports relaxation and reduces stress. After the procedure, manual lymphatic drainage helps move the built-up fluid and allows it to go back into the lymphatic system to flush out excess waste and fluid. This helps prevent bruising, scarring, and fibrosis (thick scar tissue under the skin). It is recommended to increase comfort, prevent the issues listed above, and get the best results from the procedure.
